I don't want to give you the impression that Newark or the NEK in general is a bad place to raise kids...you just have to go into it with your eyes open and know what's out there. Crime in the area tends to stay under the radar, much of it goes un-reported. Drugs and alcohol are a problem throughout the NEK, like in many rural areas of the country.
I would second the recommendation for Burke. I live in another part of VT now, but if I were to move back to NEK, that would be one of my picks.
And yes, you can choose St. J Academy if you want to. Both schools are really excellent - the only real reason I can see for choosing one over another would be if your child had an interest in something that was only offered at one of the schools, because they both have their niche offerings.
Wherever you choose to live, don't underestimate the hassle of driving on roads there in the winter.
