My girlfriend has an xbox 360 set up in her place. She let me play on it some time back. It's so amazing I went and bought the whole set up this evening, with the console, a 52 inch monitor and a sort of home theatre system.

I was bringing them home and my neighbour happened to pass by. He said he has the Wii and I should get the Wii instead for it's better. He invited me to try his set up and it was too good to ignore, unfortunately.

Right now, I'm torn. I am not sure if I wanna unpack and set this up or get a Wii thing instead.

I'm a complete xbox/wii gaming dunce, and this is my first time. Can anyone with experience guide me on the merits and demerits of each? It's much appreciated.

360 is way better. We have both, and never, EVER use the Wii unless we have company, and even when we DO have company it's very rare to turn it on and play it.

The quirkiness wears off fast.

Plus, Forza 4 just came out, Battlefield 3 is coming, Modern Warfare 3 is coming.....no contest in my opinion!

The only thing I find the Wii useful for is parties containing copious amounts of alcoholic imbibements. Between the two, I find that the 360 has a better variety of games that don't lose their appeal after 15-20 minutes.

Dude, keep the 360. Its WAAAAAAY better than the Wii. You can easily just go pick up a Wii later to add, but really, there are more people our age (assuming you are 20s or 30s) playing the 360. Make sure you get Modern Warefare 2 and within the next few weeks Modern Warfare 3 and add me to your list of Xbox live friends - "Empr Guillotine"

360 by far. 360 + Kinect = best gaming system available.

Late chiming in, but we have the Wii and a Playstation. The Wii doesn't get used much...

These 2 consoles have entirely different groups of users.

1) Xbox 360: If you are to get it, get the slim version. Microsoft franchise. Some of the signature games are Halo, Gears of War, Ace Combat, Dance Central with Kinect, Ridge Racer 6, Lost Odyssey, Saints Row, Dead Rising, to name a few. In order to play with other players online, you will need to purchase a Gold Membership. Otherwise you can play locally. Frequent updates just as you get with Windows. It has Netflix, Hulu, and other services you can pay for to watch movies on it. I use this console the most. You can also get an additional equipment, Kinect. The device will detect your motions, and you become the controller.

2) Nintendo Wii: Plays classic Nintendo games. Mario series, Zelda, Donkey Kong, Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles, Wii Sports, Sonic, and many others that are shared with other consoles. It is a great console for family. Online play is free. Playing sports such as tennis and baseball is really fun. You use the controllers, and the device detects your motions.

3) Sony PlayStation 3: Plays classic PlayStation games. Some exclusive games are God of War, Gran Turismo 5, inFamous 2, Killzone 3, LittleBigPlanet 2, MotorStorm, Resistance 3, Ridge Racer 7, Time Crisis series, Twisted Metal, Uncharted series, White Knight Chronicles 2, etc.
I played PlayStation 2 the most before Xbox 360 came out. I like the controller on this console better than Xbox one when playing First Person Shooter games. The controller is not as bulky so it suits better on my hands. Online play is free.

I would have to say if you have family members that would play with you, Wii is a good option. If you enjoy good graphics and some PlayStation specific games, PlayStation 3 is a good option. If you like games such as Halo, you can go with Xbox 360.

Definitely Xbox 360, if you want to do motion control, get a Kinect.
