I've never owned a gaming system of any kind so don't know what's out there but would like to get a system that allows me to play all the classic arcade games from the 80's like Defender, Joust, Robotron, pac-man, etc. I do see that you can play and even download many if not all of these games over the internet but I don't like using the arrow keys on my keyboard to play them and was thinking perhaps the graphics would be even better on a dedicated gaming system. Any suggestion? Thanks

I believe ps3 allows you to download classics.

I have a PS3 but will admit that the XBox 360 Live Arcade has much better classic games than PS3.

Or, you could pick up a PS2 cheap at Game Stop and get stuff like:

Get a Atari 2600 or better yet the Atari 7800 with a european game pad as shown in the wikipedia link below cause the North American joysticks suck on the 7800. The 7800 is also backwards compatible with the 2600 and its massive library of games.
These super thin tvs they sell today don't work well if at all on the older game consoles. The heavy tube tvs work great and are easy to find for classic game consoles.

Pro: 7800 is probably cheaper (especially compared to XBox Live Arcade)
Con: Very specific usage, lower quality graphics, harder to find games

Ebay is great for the old games and consoles. Based on the first post and some of the games mentioned, either of those old Atari systems would be the best choice.

I wouldn't consider Atari because I want graphics and sound true to playing those 80's games at the arcades.

I have seen that you can download some if not all of those old games but not sure how that works being I'm the opposite of a techie lol. Do you download to computer and then burn onto a disc (if so what kind of disc) and then put disc into ps3?

I'm on a budget and don't want to spend a lot. Thanks again

Pick up something like this. It's cheap, doesn't take much space and lets you play classic games. Search around, I'm not recommending this or any of the available models - you'll have to find what suits you best yourself - but the options are there. I've seen several very different devices like this, even a Guitar Hero one, though I wouldn't recommend it
Yac.

The Wii has an outlet for original old school game controllers. We just went to Goodwill and picked up an old GameCube controller we found. There was a huge bin full of all different kinds of old school controllers.

We use that to play Zelda, Pac Man, Donkey Kong, *******, etc.
