What do you think are some of the best video games from the 2000s?

I'd put the Grand Theft Auto games, Vice City and San Andreas on the list. I would also put The Sims (#1) and Call of Duty 2 (Best call of duty game ever).

In my opinion from earliest to latest

1999/2000 - Everquest

2000 - The Sims

2001 - GTA III (and all the following GTA games)

2002 - Neverwinter Nights

2002 - Battlefield 1942 (and expansions) + Battlefield 2 (release: 2009?)

2006 - The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion (and then Skyrim, obviously)

GTA San Andreas was my favorite last gen game, It took me a very long time to get bored of it.

Others would be Doom 3, Halo, Red Faction I and II, Resdient Evil 4, Timesplitters, the other GTAs, Midnight Club, Max Payne, Medal of Honor Frontline etc. Lots of greats games, I feel old talking about them now.

GTA San Andreas was just insanely good.

Also:
Metal Gear Solid IV
M.A.G.
Need for Speeds

One of things I have noticed is that too many games are designed for online play. Metal Gear Solid IV took some ungoldy number of hours to finish. Now you get a 10hr campaign and the rest is designed to play online.

I would put the original Unreal Tournament on that list even though it was released in late 1999 (aka "UT99", released Nov 30, 1999). It was mostly played in the early 2000s and is the greatest online multiplayer FPS of all time. It wasn't merely a disposable game, but an actual cybersport that felt and played like a sport at the higher levels (clan matches, organized capture-the-flag games with voice comm, etc.). There had to have been over 10,000 custom maps and mods released for that game.

The Legend of Zelda: Majora's Mask was voted Gamefaq's game of the decade.

On December 24, 2010, Majora's Mask was voted as the Game of the Decade (2000–2009) by GameFaqs, beating out Super Smash Bros. Brawl, which had beaten The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess two rounds prior.

I have to agree with you on Unreal Tournament. It was a GREAT game.

The other games I think were/are great were of course GTA San Andreas (I have the Hot Coffee version ) and Modern Warfare 2 which was released in November of 2009.

Modern Warfare 2 is probably my choice for best game of the 2000s. I still play that game almost daily. Never get tired of it. Play mostly Free For All or Ground War though. Never even bothered with campaign play.

Honorable mention goes to:

Metal Gear Solid

Yes! I put so much into UT. For about 20 months it dominated my play time. At the height of my unemployed college dropout clan time, I was putting in 3-4 hours / day in botmatch training, 1-2 hours / day with my clanmates, and a couple hours a day on various pubs.

What was great was the player community (like PuF), the modding community, ngStats, and the huge variety of experiences. Epic CTF servers with all custom maps, Domination and TDM clanmatches on PG and CB, Rocket Arena with my brothers, 2vs2 DM matches where my brother and I went I think 17-0, and probably my favorite, a Lo Grav free for all with about 150 custom maps in rotation. The amount of free DLC content that was available both officially and from countless modders was beautiful.

2K3 and 2K4 were decent and UT3 had its moments but the original was a monster.
