Huge news today from VRDC (part of GDC). Sony's keynote announced price, date, etc. for the PSVR.
It's $399 -- BUT, that does not come with the mandatory PS4 Camera and the optional-but-required-for-some-experiences PS4 Move controllers x2. In my opinion this is a bit deceptive. MOST PS4 owners will need to purchase the Camera and Move x2 separately, or in a PSVR "complete" bundle, but they didn't bother to mention that or show the price for that, preferring to tout their $399 price point which about 7% of PS4 owners will be able to take advantage of.
Still, it's a pretty good price point I suppose, even if MY guess was $400 WITH the Camera and Move x2. I would guess the complete bundle will be $500 and a bundle that also includes the PS4 and one Dualshock 4 will be $800.
By comparison, S7 GearVR is $700. Rift without controller tracking is $600 + a powerful PC and Rift Touch will likely be $150. Vive is $800 + a powerful PC and comes with tracked controllers. Viewmaster 1.0 has been as low as $14 + any Android phone...
The OTHER big news to come out was MUCH less positive. It's DELAYED. The new launch date is "October." They had told us over and over again "first half of 2016," which was probably 3.5 months from right now, but instead it's going to be 7.5 months from now.
No word on when pre-orders might open.
In other news, the hardware appearance and specs are pretty much what they've been showing people for several months. The software looks fantastic and lots of things were teased although there weren't many definitive announcements of new software. They stated there will be over 50 gaming titles compatible with PSVR available by the end of December, although that doesn't tell us what type of games, whether they're made FOR VR or VR is just implemented in some capacity, etc. It could actually mean games that are already out and patched for some sort of VR support. They mentioned over 230 developers are working on PSVR titles.
They did mention there will be a VR version of Star Wars: Battlefront. All games as well as Blu-rays will be playable in "Cinematic Mode," basically a virtual theater. And everyone will receive Playroom VR, which is kind of like Nintendoland for the Wii U -- a series of minigames that utilize VR in various ways.
