I don't live in Manassas but I wonder if NoVA, having more of a transient working population, has more of a bedroom community lifestyle? I noticed that visiting family in Winchester. Young kids (under 12) were nowhere to be seen in my relatives' neighborhoods until after 6pm, when presumably they were picked up from daycare. After 3pm, I noticed alot of kids 12 and older running loose, presumably they were latch key kids and both parents were still at work.

But even in Winchester, folks were friendly and outgoing, as they are here in the Roanoke area. When everyone was home from work, lots of folks were out chatting with neighbors and such. I suspect that with a little more time you'd fit right in!

Check out Meetup.com. I bet you'll find some in-person kindred spirits at Moms, Moms Meetups, events, clubs and groups near Manassas, Virginia. Meetup is actually a great social networking tool for adults.

Sean

We have black widows and brown recluses in the general NoVA area but both are somewhat rare from my experience. Check out this recent thread for more info: //www.city-data.com/forum/virgi...-virginia.html

Meetup.com is a cool way to find local interest groups like seanpecor said.

I grew up in MD and have lived in VA for more than 15 years. I have never seen a poisonous spider even though I know they are in the area. They tend to like dark places so you're not likely to find them unless you go digging around in a wood pile or a dark corner in a basement.

Also, as far as meeting people, find a mom's group by checking with local community centers and churches. That's what I did 21 years ago when I moved to a new area with a 2 year old. That gave him someone to play with and me other mothers to talk to. I stayed with one church group til my boys were about 6 and 8. I also belonged to a separate group that met in a community center til my boys started school.

Welcome! Mananass is an up and coming town...it used to be predominately occupied by, rebel flag carrying, redneck, trailer park, ignorant types. But now it's become a lot more diversified, and there have been quite a few new community developments built too. I also hear that there's near future plans of actually bringing corporate type businesses as well, which will make the town a lot more sought after.

Just mingle at your local eateries, bookstores, shops, etc...you will be able to meet many families/couples in the area.
