I've got a lot of down time in the next month or two and I'd love to go do some hiking up some mountains or somewhere very scenic. I might do some rock-climbing too.

Any suggestions of where to go? (I'm from Hampton Roads)

well, it's a bit of a drive, but, along side of the Blue Ridge Parkway near Meadows of Dan, Va. there is the Pinnacles of Dan, plenty of rocks. Go to the dam, walk down to the pipeline, walk the pipeline until it goes into the Mountain, you'll see it on your left. Be careful, it's a long way to haul someone with a broken ankle.

Sounds good. Can you park near the dam?

You might want to check out this site:

Hiking in Virginia & West Virginia - lots of great hikes, topo maps, directions.

I live in Hampton Roads too, like going up in the Nelson/Amherst area. Spy Rock is a favorite short day hike of mine, nice rock scramble too (but not real rock climbing). It's easily doable in a day trip from Hampton Roads - I remember I hiked it last year, left in the AM, got up on the parkway and it was snowing in mid-October! And back to the beach by evening. If you are a serious climber you could always drive out to Seneca Rocks (about 5.5 hours away).
