I am interested in going hiking somewhere within a two hour drive from either Baltimore or Annapolis. Some of the places I have visited include: Patapsco State Park, Harper's Ferry, Great Falls, and probably others that i have forgotten. We want a varied terrain, not too intense but not flat, paved or extremely crowded either. We would also prefer not to be in the car much(not fond of the scenic drive tours) once we arrive at our destination.
Any suggestions out there???

Pick up the AT somewhere at a town of your choice. There's a hike for you.

I second Dolly Sods if you can get out there.

For physically demanding hikes try Three Ridges Wilderness or The Priest wilderness an hour South, South East of Charlottesville.

I'd pick up a good hiking book, there are numerous beautiful areas to go hiking in the region you are looking at, to many to list on a forum. Here's a pretty good book I've used on Shenandoah:

Catoctin Mountain State Park is a nice place to hike about an hour northeast of Baltimore. If you are up for a farther drive, there are a lot of nice hikes in Shenandoah National Park. I would particularly recommend White Oak Canyon -- one of the more popular hikes in the park. Also nearby the park is Old Rag mountain -- one of the top hikes in Virginia.

C&O Canal is a nice route to walk along, but it is probably more popular with cyclists b/c it is so flat and wide.
