Wondered how the cost of living in VA compares to OH. I know that Northern Virginia is expensive but seems that the South/West part is much more affordable. Even according to the city ratings site, Virginia Beach and Norfolk and Roanoke is less expensive to live than let's say Cleveland Ohio.

I'd say that Ohio's metro areas are cheaper compared to most of Virginia's. Large metro areas, such as Cleveland, Columbus, and Cincinnati price under places such as NoVa (in every market) and parts of Virginia Beach. Of course, since Hampton Roads covers a large area and thus numerous and varying neighborhoods, I'm sure there may be places cheaper than parts of Ohio's cities. What you have to look for are similar neighborhoods (run-down vs. upscale). Also, do the same when looking at Roanoke. For those places, I'd look into cities such as Youngstown or Lima and SE Ohio for places in SW VA. We moved here 20 years ago mainly due to costs and traffic and would never move back pending job relocations.
