Parts of the area (Newport is one word ) are pretty good. The Denbigh section is cool, and parts near Christopher Newport University are nice as well. I worked in that area, and was surprised at how nice it was. Oyster Point near Patrick Henry Mall is nice as well, as is Warwick.

The East End/downtown area is the part to look out for. There's been almost 20 murders in NN this year, and I would say at least 15-18 were in the East End, if not all.

I don't know the name of the place, but I have a friend who stays in an apartment complex off I-64 and J. Clyde Morris.

bad news, NN is having a rough year in the homicide dept. good news, nearly all have been downtown, east end, or denbigh. Some great areas include North End, Kiln Creek, Menchville, or port Warwick even NW Hampton is worth looking at. newport news is better than people want to give it credit for. A couple of close-by cities to consider would be Poquoson or York County. If this is a long-term move you'll love the schools in those towns.

Even if you found a nice area, which there are few of, the schools are BAD!

This lady hasn't been to DC or PG county MD and seen a REALLY BAD school. NN schools don't have that great a reputation across the board, but there are a few halfway decent ones in certain parts. But of course if you have enough $ i would go to york co even the lowest-priced parts have good schools. Since your kid is only 3 NN wouldn't be bad till he is ready to go to school then try to get into York Co. or Poquoson. Trust me, two of the best systems in HR.

Default Schools bad? Take a closer look.

Wow. I know things have changed since I grew up there (left in 1998). But the schools have always been good. I say that from having volunteered/taught at schools in other areas with comparable population size and smaller. I was always surprised at just how professional NN schools are in comparison to other places. The fact is that Newport News, thanks to all of the military, receives lots of federal dollars and is able to translate that into programs for nearly every type of student. I graduated from the International Baccalaureate program at Warwick High School - a MAJOR plus in college. Warwick this year was ranked 71 out of ALL OF THE HIGH SCHOOLS IN AMERICA and has been in the top ten for at least the last 10 years. That is certainly something to celebrate. http://sbo.nn.k12.va.us/news/archive...wsweek_dp2.pdf

I do have to say that the place doesn't have as much soul as I would hope. The town is centered, more than ever now, around consumerism, thanks again, to all those military bucks. Those who are disenfranchised really feel it and act it. Gangs, formal or de facto, have always been a problem and you'll see that in the upper levels at any school (I went to Denbigh and Warwick HS). But they seem to keep to themselves, as noted above. It is likely these students that make people say the schools are bad.

I think parts of Denbigh are headed south. I grew up there, and it's a totally different place when I visit now. Just be careful. Nicely kept lawns and facades in NN pretty much translate to okay neighborhoods.

I couldn't see myself living in NN again because it's just not for me. But I would definitely recommend it for anyone who likes an exurban community with lots of shopping, the beach, etc.

Good luck in school!
