The Vineyards Williamsburg: gated vs nongated (Forest, Windsor: renting, houses, neighborhoods)

Hi all We are looking at a home in the subdivision The Vineyards at Jockey's Neck in Williamsburg Va. It is located on the Williamsburg Winery, it is very beautiful, we loved it.

It is not gated and wondered what people like and don't like about gated neighborhoods. Pros and cons??

Anyone know of this area? Let me know Thanks in advance

anyway, we moved into 'the vineyards' and we love many things about this subdivision, BUT, mostly retired neighbors, not many young children. Beautiful pool, grounds and homes. We are renting a house here for a year while we look around at other subdivisions. I just wanted to know what people thought about gated vs non gated communities, pros and cons.

I have sold a fair amount of houses to buyers in the Williamsburg area. Some of them wouldn't even consider a gated community. A few were buying specifically because of it but mainly because that is what they lived in in other areas. Most seem to pick the neighborhood based on the feel of it. Kingsmill and Ford's Colony seem to appeal to different types. Most like one or the other but again it's based on the look and feel of the neighborhood not the fact that it is gated. The same goes for Governor's Land, Greensprings, Stonehouse, Queens Lake, Brickshire, Windsor Forest, Holly Hills, Port Anne, Skimino Landing, The Retreat, Fieldcrest, Landfall, Wexford Hills, First Colony, Powhattan Secondary and many others in the Williamsburg area all of which are non gated.
