It was a different story almost everywhere in the 50's, wasn't it? Except in California, maybe.

But even so- there is a resentment from C-ville negros towards the white preppy UVA kids from out of state who run all over town and seem to have an arrogance about them.

AFAIK, many of the students are from NOVA. Being a state school, tuition is really high for out of state kids, unless they have something special to offer the school, and I don't think those are the kids who would be that stupid. I can't comment on the subject here more than that, because I just can't remember well enough.


I have heard of incidents where there have been racial tension among the UVA kids and the native blacks of Charlottesville. They are largely right- I have to say, the kids are just lacking respect.

I'm sure some kids are disrespectful and out of control. I know there have been a few incidents, I think the last spate of them was in 2005. I thought these were more between students... the University Corner abuts downtown. I know there were also solidarity demonstrations by other students in support of African American students in response to those incidents. I hope there won't be any more of them.
