I have family in Virginia and it is most certainly a Southern city, especially south of DC. Im jokingly called Yankee all the time.

It isn't Deep South like Georgia, Alabama or Mississippi, but it is Southern, no doubt. The portions right around DC definitely have more of a northern vibe, but even they are mixed, and the rest of the state has a definite southern feel. Culturally, climate, food, churches, etc. For instance, Richmond isn't that different from Birmingham or Montgomery.

Virginia is geographically at the southern tip of the Mid-Atlantic region but culturally they could be viewed as southern.

Geographically Virginia is definitely in the South. Socially and politically its two different states though, with the DC suburbs in NOVA being very mid-Atlantic/Northeastern in feel, while the rest of the state is pretty typcially southern. But then again there a lot of states like that. Metro New York City is way different than the rest of New York State. Same for Metro Chicago vs. Illinois or even metro Houston vs the rest of Texas.
