At mile 0 in Abingdon the elevation 2040'. Halfway to Damascus at South Holston Lake it is 1750'. In Damascus its 1930'.

There is a book you can order from Amazon.com titled The Virginia Creeper Trail Companion. It gives a lot of information about the trail mile by mile including the % grade of incline or decline.

I haven't heard anything bad about Whitetop to Damascus so I'm assuming all is well there. The person who sent me that link does a lot of work on that web site and I'm sure he would have mentioned it if there was any damage.

The depression at Trestle 7 is shallow and dry. Authorities may be able to establish a "temporary" trail within the ROW once debris is cleared. I suspect replacement of the trestle would be an expensive and long term project.

Unfortunately, the newspaper article said that Trestle 8 just to the south was "severely damaged" also. This one is fairly high over a rough ravine. Let's hope it can be restored without complete rebuild.

Here is an upbeat article about business as usual on The Trail from the local newspaper. I love the comment about even without electricity we can still add and subtract to make change for customers.

Has anyone been on the VA creeper trail recently. I'm wondering if this is a good year to see the white rhododendrons.

I was on it from White Top Station to Damascus the first weekend of June and only saw a few white rhododendrons.

I thought I'd answered my own question because I was in the Tremont area of GSMNP as they were just beginning at 1500'. They usually bloom out according to elevation so I would guess the creeper is a bit later. These are the big pinkish white rhodies that grow in the wet areas.

But they have a 2 year cycle, one year is good, the other they rest.
