Hello!

I will be visiting VA Beach for my dad's birthday this weekend and I wanted to make a reservation at a nice restaurant that overlooks the beach.

Any suggestions?

Thanks in advance

I don't know how upscale you want to go, but for a nice but more casual restaurant, the North Beach Bar & Grill at the Hampton Inn North, 3107 Atlantic Avenue, was very nice when we ate there. You're right on the beach near the Neptune Statue. The food was very good and the drinks were good and reasonably priced, and the staff was friendly, and attentive but not overbearing. Not real upscale, like I said, but quite good and relaxing, and not a big hit to the wallet.

My family has enjoyed Mahi Mah's. It is right on the beach. It is not the cheapest and can get crowded but is not too bad if you go there off of peak lunch and dinner hours. Good prices for happy hour. which is usually 12 -6. Discounted lunch prices on selected items M - F but not the weekend.

I personally enjoy Harpoon Larry's but it is a couple of blocks from the beach. Lots of people like Tautogs (again, a couple of blocks from the beach). I have eaten there several times and my experiences have been decidedly negative, but it is a local favorite.

I made reservations at Mahi Mah's after reading the reviews. I hope that it's good. The only downside is that they really don't accomodate for birthdays, they don't even sing. So I might look into a few other places. Although dinner isn't the highlight of the night, singing happy birthday and bringing out a dessert or something would have been nice. *shrugs*

What about Catch 31 inside the Hilton Hotel on the oceanfront? Maybe you could call them and see if they do anything 'special' for birthdays.

Not sure if you asked or if it's too late now but, if Mahi Mahi allows:

- you to bring in a cake
- your waiter to light it and bring it to the table
- your group to sing happy birthday to your dad

...then that's a nice compromise for a restaurant on the water that you'll all most likely enjoy. It's a small bit of bending on their part that keeps business coming in this economy.
