Hi all. My husband and I are planning a leisurely trip from TN to MY taking I-81 through VA. We would like to slow down and take a relaxing trip. What are the best caverns and other things to do off of I-81? We have no time frame and we are not good at taking it slow. We really want to try it this time.

Thanks.

These are my picks:

From TN, stop at Abingdon at the Martha Washington Inn, have lunch & see one of the oldest theatres in the nation. Spend some time in Roanoke, visit Market Square downtown with over 60 restaurants, shops, Transportation museum with vintage train collection, Art Museum, O Winston Link photography museum, farmers market. If you are in town on a weekend visit the states largest flea market, Happys. There is always a festival going on each weekend.
Stop at Lexington, see Stonewall Jacksons' home, Va Military Institute. Natural Bridge is nearby, it is definately unique! More civil war history is at New Market
with a visitor center, battlefield. Luray Caverns is 15 minutes off I-81, worth a stop also. If you have more time you should detour off I-81 to I-64 and take a visit to Monticello, it isn't too far off I-81 also(its a beautiful drive over Afton Mountain on I-64 also). While there visit Michie Tavern and enjoy some original
colonial recipes of fried chicken, spicy green beans, served by people in period
costumes. BTW, I-81 is quite scenic in the fall when the leaves are turning!

In addition to all of the excellent suggestions, you could stop in Staunton and check out the Frontier Culture Museum, or go downtown and see Woodrow Wilson's birthplace or catch a Shakespeare play at the authentically replicated Globe theater, or just stroll around the historic downtown and get a cup of coffee at several of the coffeehouses or catch a movie at one of the 2 theaters.

Correction to my above post. It's not the Globe theater, but rather the Blackfriars Playhouse in downtown Staunton.

I-81 goes right through the middle of JMU in Harrisonburg. Some fun sub places, hot dogs, pizza, football games, motels, hotels..............6000 kids from NoVa, away from their parents for the first time...

If it's not too far off the beaten path for you, try to visit the national D-Day Memorial in Bedford (Home - National D-Day Memorial). It's a very moving experience, and I would recommend you read The Bedford Boys before you go.

Also, you might want to take a side trip into Blacksburg and visit Virginia Tech. Another moving place with the memorial in front of Burress Hall. And for a happier moment, visit Lane Stadium... GO HOKIES!!!
