Bottom line is that even in Harrisonburg your stress would be cut in about half from living in the NoVA area like in Alexandria or something.... I mean Winchester has strip malls too.... Most any place that dares call itself a "city" is going to have a fair amount of strip malls. Sadly that's the natural "progression" of things.

Elkton for example is right off skyline drive,...and is a 1 stoplight town.

I will also mention, and could easily be wrong,...that 'touristy' does not have to mean miles of crappy stripmalls with Ooutback Steakhouses and AppleBees everywhere. Tourism can also foster the historic side of alot of these towns, helping to keep the quaintness and charm.

Just my thoughts...

We have 3 stop lights now

My brother went to JMU and it was quite nice visiting there. My relatives, who're typical gov workers, like to take day trips to play golf in H-burg. I like to go to Massanutten, though that area is a bit too crowded nowadays. But H-burg is still a very beautiful place, and I think it's getting popular with DC slickers who might want to buy a home for the weekends/vacation or something. I would say that the only ugly, stereotypical place in H-burg is 33; otherwise, everywhere else is just beautiful.

I agree. Went down to close on our property last week, and drove through Hburg some more,...saw the courthouse area....and it is true,...the stretch of 33 is the worst,...and rest of Hburg is quite nice.
Although, shopping aside, I prefer the Elkton area due to it being even less populated. Only eyesore around Elkton I saw was the Merck and Coors plants.
