My husband and I are thinking of moving to VA for retirement (originally planned on moving to western NC but want to stay closer to family - presently live in Maryland). We really want great mountain views, low crime, but some conveniences. Any thoughts on Amherst and Bedford? Any other suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks.

Between the two towns, Bedford would have better mountain views, in my opinion. It is adjacent to the Blue Ridge Pkwy and
the drive up to the Peaks of Otter is awesome. Generally, the road is open year round. The town of Bedford is a sleepy little
town with just basic conveniences. Lynchburg & Roanoke are only 20 minutes away. Smith Mountain Lake is in Bedford
County why not look at homes around the lake? A lot of retirees move to Bedford & Franklin Counties. The Lake has beautiful
mountain views. Welcome!

Thank you Mountain Living for the response. We are planning on visiting sometime soon to check out the different areas, though we have been through Peaks of Otter and SML but it's been a good while and I can't remember the area very well.

Doesn't anyone else have any recommendations? I welcome suggestions from areas other than Bedford and Amherst too.

Thanks.

Bayse is a cute little mountain area in Shenandoah Valley. There is a small ski resort, small lake and a golf course. Also, a lot of retirees. Look up Bryce Resort to check out the amenities. It's not too far from shopping and restaurants although it's limited in the immediate area.

To make family visits easier, consider the areas around Harrisonburg and even Front Royal. As mentioned above, Basye and all the other small communities around it are very pretty. They easy access to I-81 and I-66, depending on what part of Maryland you would be visiting.

Best of luck.

Thanks lynchburglover. We're pretty familiar with Front Royal as we visit SNP often. We'll check out Harrisonburg.

Several people here have made lengthy negative comments about Front Royal and its people.

The Bedford area is nice. We're relocating nearby. Another perk is your close to Smith Mountain Lake.

Shopping and recreation there if you want a alternative to going into Roanoke.
