Hi everybody,

My husband has just gotten a job in Alexandria, VA. We don't want to live in the city and need some advice which suburb or neighbouring city to look into. The commute to work shouldn't be more than 30-45 minutes. We would prefer a single family home where we can bring our dogs, and we can afford up to $2000- a month.

You will get more and better responses reposting in the Northern Virginia sub forum. Also, do a search and read, read, read what's already there. Bottom line, you need to look south for what you want, probably a townhouse for that rental price.

Also, please come back and report or give feedback to responses or ask more questions. Don't know about others, but I get tired of responding to one time posters. You get better responses by giving more info.

Which part of Alexandria will he be working in? If he's in the Fairfax County part from a commuting perspective that would work to your advantage if you're looking to live further south.

As the other poster said, post this in the Northern Virginia forum, you'll get more responses but you'd like Lake Ridge which is in Woodbridge from what it sounds like you're looking for.

Commute might further than what they want from here unless he works in the off hours.

It's not the DISTANCE you will travel in Northern Va., but how LONG it takes! What should be a 15 min trip will usually take about 45 mins....traffic is horrendous!

Thanks. I will post this in the Northern Virginia forum.
The job is in Fairfax County. I will definitely give feedback once I have more information.
I have been checking out every website I can think of and reading about the place, but it always helps to get advice from people who either live or have been there

Thanks again

Spotsylvania's really nice. I believe it's under the 45min limit, and there's always the grand VRE (my husband loves this) as far down here as well. I live in a community that seems to be trading out from older families, to younger. I'm moving for medical reasons (need less sunshine-our house will be someone else's come June), but most are elderly that just want to move down South. There are currently 5 or 6 homes aside from ours and a neighbors whose is pending as well, for sale. We live tucked between two federally protected parks (lots of trees & hiking) and it's pretty quite and to this day I've never heard a police car come into our small community. I think in general, most of Spotsylvania is a good, nice place. And even the local Sheriff's office is great. We happen to have 3 police officers in separate residences in our community. So I know a few personally and they're all nice people. Rent is between 1200-1800 on average for the whole area. Most homes have only about .29 acre to themselves. But lots of places have old trees, as they were built a while ago and not these baby trees just dropped into the front yard. Good luck with wherever you choose!
