Yuck! It seems that areas somewhat near water at least get a nice breeze? We are in NEPA right now, and we definitely see our share of humidity as well, so avoiding it altogether isn't a big issue. I'm talking more about Florida bugs....tons of cockroaches, year round hot weather where they never die off! As long as I am not far from some sort of water, I am happy!

Yes there are breezes off the water and the temps are always cooler than inland. The bugs here are not an issue and roaches do not roam in gangs like they do in FL.

Have you looked at Poquoson? In Realtor.com currently I see a ranch house listed at $200,000 in a water access community and the taxes are $2500/year. I don't consider that outrageous. There may be a HOA fee for the use of the dock, and you may have to buy flood insurance. There are also a few others in that price range with similar taxes.

BTW, the mil rate on homes is $1.07 per hundred of assessed value, and $4.15 per hundred on cars: http://www.ci.poquoson.va.us/city_de...ax_rates_dates

That isn't too bad compared to some other areas, plus the city does some spraying for mosquito control.

But those areas tend to have no jobs. It cuts both ways.

OP what are you comparing? You mention that you live in PA but which part, do you own a home or rent at this time, just living in a rural vice suburban area is going to affect your expenses. Don't sweat the car tax, unless you have a new high end car the annual tax burden in nothing. It's possible you might of paid more each year if your current location required you to drive the toll roads or pay bridge tolls. No one likes the car tax but for me paying it is far less than the extra gas taxes paid in NY or the draconian cigarette taxes on a pack (if you smoke), every place has it's expenses look at the total cost then decide if it's in your best interest.

Good Luck..
