With all the speculation and rumors, it is hard to know what is going on there. But one thing is certain, the President and Board really made a mess of things. Their handling of this was just awful.

Many state and local news sites also carried the same article. Some of the comments were quite in depth but I think the end is near for sweet briar. This decision is too late and doesn't provide long term confidence for returning or new students. Theoretically there are no freshman because the school was closed. With the financial cost for college, those that took this closing last spring seriously, went with other options vs. Waiting this situation out. The numbers of students is to going to be low. People would react and drop everything to go if this was a theater or sports stadium but not to rechance their life again only this time expecting turmoil.

This article gives some insight into why Briar Patch got into this situation:

Quote:
Will the college keep its 54 horses, costing $27,000 a month in food and $36,500 a month for care? Will it find the $28 million needed for deferred maintenance on its once grand buildings? Will the student-faculty ratio become higher than eight to one?
I had a former supervisor who had gone to Briar Patch. She was nuts!

Uva has many times that in "deferred maintenance". Meaningless term.

Part of the reason for the financial difficulties was that much of the endowment could not be touched. The court ordered a loosening of the restrictions so that the money could be used.

Of course, Sweet Briar will still struggle to attract and retain students. Some students are not returning, not even some who would be seniors next fall!

Even if the school closes, what would happen to the beautiful campus with its historic buildings? There is even a slave cemetery on the campus, where upwards of 60 slaves are buried!

This whole thing was handled very poorly by the college.
