When I lived in Richmond, I found the people (strangers) to be stand-offish, inconsiderate and overall more polite to your face than friendly. Now I know that is not the case with everyone... I just remember that more often than not, people wouldn't let you get in front of them on the road, and in the grocery stores they'd just leave their cart in the middle of the aisle like no.one else was in the store, not even budging even if you were standing right in front of them. I have other examples of these kinds of behaviors, like people not looking anyone on the eyes as they passed one another, etc. Anyways... I visited Roanoke and couple of times years ago when I lived in Richmond and remembered how NICE the people are there. I am considering revisiting Virginia as I love the climate and the beauty. I would like to look more into Roanoke. Can anyone tell me how the two cities compare when it comes to genuine people friendliness, acceptance of people not from the area, and acceptance of multicultural families?

Roanoke sounds like the place. Roanoke City is home to over 100 nationalities, its quite different than a decade ago. The surrounding rural areas still retain a "Mayberry" type of friendliness although if you arent a local it might be hard to "fit in", but
who knows anymore. I definately think the comparison of Roanoke to Richmond or DC suburbs is quite a streach imo.
