I am looking to relocate from NY to VA (Richmond area)

My cousin was trying to explain to me what she believes to be VA's teacher employment system and how you work for the state and can potentially be transferred to schools hours away from where you are hired.

Does anyone know what she may be referring to? County job I can understand and moved throughout the district but she was saying it like it could force you to uproot. Seems illogical to me, but anything is possible. Would love to hear from any teachers about this.

Also, if you have any insight or suggestions as to how I look for teaching jobs in Richmond area I'd be so appreciative :-)

Thanks!

Pay is based on years of teaching experience - believe it doesn't matter in what state.

Retirement Pension is dependent on number of years teaching in Virginia (no matter what county/city in Virginia).

Best way to look for job is to get in contact with the individual HR Departments for each school system in Richmond area (Richmond City, Hanover County, Henrico County, Chesterfield County) to apply.

Maybe you misunderstood my question. It wasn'the about pay or pension. It was asking, is there the possibility of getting hired in say Hanover and then the following year being moved to winchester for example?

No - the hiring is by city/county. If you work for a city or county you work for them not the state. There is the possibility of being transferred among schools in that city or county.

This ^ is correct. The districts (county or city) could transfer within the district, but that's it.

In 23 years I have only known a few people who have been "destaffed" from my school and placed in another building. Destaffs typically happen due to enrollment.

Which is typical for almost anywhere I have ever known. What she said made absolutely no sense to me and I was baffled.
