I'm a 20 year old male trying to decide on coastal town to move to. I have been looking deeply into Virginia beach and Charleston SC. I was just wondering what the atmosphere was for Virginia beach as far as young adult/student life goes. Things such as nightlife and entertainment. I don't know much about Virginia beach so any comments on it or Charleston are welcome.

There is a thread on Va. Beach and surrounding: https://www.city-data.com/forum/hampton-roads-area/ - Charleston is South Carolina, tons of threads there as well.

VA Beach is a TOURIST spot....yeah, there are lots of residents, but most of the "events" aren't even listed in the paper for residents....they know NOTHING about what is happening...and if they did, they couldn't find parking.

Head south...

VA Beach is WAY more than a tourist town and there are tons of amenities and diverse entertainment options, take it from someone who actually lives here. It's actually just one city in a metro of 1.7 million that stretches from Williamsburg to the Oceanfront, all surrounded by water. There are thousands of college students attending ODU, CNU, William and Mary, Virginia Wesleyan, Hampton University and they bring with them the energy and lifestyles of young adults for sure.
Moved here from SoCal ten years ago and very much happy with the decision.

Virginia Beach is a great place to visit. To live? That depends.

Good jobs are few and far between, so be prepared. The cost of living is high, wages are low.

The strong military presence is both the life blood and bane of the surrounding area's existence.

Plenty of great about the place as well if you love the water.

You're young, so I'll add in that it is not really a place to live if you're looking to settle down with someone. Virginia Beach, along with Norfolk, has a ridiculous hook-up culture. I spent my early 20s there, and couldn't believe some of the things I witnessed.

It really depends upon what your skillset is and what you're willing to do.

My brother-in-law's brother just moved down at 21. He took a job as a valet since it was what he could find and has had some nights where he came home with $400 in tips. Heck, he might even make more than I do at my white collar job most days. While that experience is not a general rule, it can show that if you're young and willing to do whatever it takes, it's not bad. He shares a house near Chicks Beach with a couple of other people he met through work and seems to be having a fun time meeting new people and doing new things. .... you're young.

Would you be moving to attend college?

As a resident I call BS. I have no trouble knowing about the events going on.

ETA: we always manage to find parking as well.
