I do like Lynchburg but question these constant lists of best places to live-retire-die or whatever they purport. Often it's put out here with no proof or evidence on how the outcome was put together. I see a couple places on there I disagree with 100%.

Lynchburg is a great place to live imo, but I cant grasp Philadelphia as a place to retire, much less a town to visit. Isnt the
Northeast where the "new retiree refugees" coming from?

I've been to Lynchburg quite a few times and I liked it. My only gripe about it is the traffic is terrible, especially coming into Lynchburg from the south on US-29. US-29 is a parking lot from the area south of US-460 to US-460 junction. The constant speed limit changes don't help, either. Business 29/Wards Road blows also, especially with the poorly timed traffic lights. It's a shame the US-29 freeway bypass project around the south side of Lynchburg got killed. It would've connected with the existing US-29 freeway that runs from US-460 to Amherst. It would've relieved the existing US-29 tremendously.

I don't think I could retire someplace that doesn't have a major airport.

Everyone in Lynchburg drives to a nearby airport. Dulles(Wash DC) is under a 3 hr drive, Raleigh is about the same or less,
Greensboro & Richmond is about 2 hrs and Roanoke is 1 hour. There is also Amtrak service to DC.

You can fly out of LYH and connect to anywhere thru Charlotte. Avg time in security line--5 minutes. Parking--cheap. Drive time to airport--minutes. I'll never drive to another airport again.
