How long a drive would it be to get to decent opportunities for hiking, biking, etc.? Are there groups geared toward outdoor activity? Is there a focus on local food and businesses? Just looking for some general information if anyone's interested in answering.

Not sure about biking but there are hiking opportunities everywhere you look. We're a little north of Staunton and we can easily get into the Shenandoah Park, as well as other areas. I believe Staunton has a lot of small local owned restaurants where they serve Alfalfa and other rabbit food. Actually, I think they really do have the restaurants you're looking for. I tend to go for the pizza, burgers and so on so I'm not real helpful there.

Thank you, Bigfoot! So, can you give me a rough estimate on how long, if you lived right in Staunton, it would take to get to hiking areas? 30 minutes? Or would there be opportunities closer to or right in town? Just trying to get a rough idea before we head out to take a look.

One great example is Crabtree Falls. About 50 minutes from Staunton. Beautiful area with hiking. Shenandoah National Park is about the same with some of the hiking trails likely closer. I live an hour north so not real sure of all the trails there. I'd call the NPS in Shenandoah for a start.

Within 1 hours drive you can reach some of the best hiking in Virginia and maybe the east coast. The Appalachian trails has section through the region along with lots of trails in the national parks, state parks, county parks and other trails to places like blue hole swimming hole in albemarle county.

One of the more popular and closer trails is Humpback Rock on the Blue Ridge Parkway, 20 minutes from Staunton. There are a ton of trails to the West in the George Washington National Forest too. St. Mary's down near Greenville, 15 minutes, is awesome with a nice waterfall at the end.

As for biking, if you visit, stop in at Black Dog Bikes on S. Lewis St. in Staunton. The owner is really cool and sets up daily and weekly rides from the shop. If you really like any type of cycling that's the place to start locally, they will be more than eager to share all the local possibilities.
