Roanoke and Lynchburg both have excellent local healthcare. For extreme cases UVa is not far away.

Thumbs down AVOID Waynesboro!!!!

Hi,
I retired from the National Guard in Staunton and was told Waynesboro was the perfect town because it is small and has awesome mountain views. I am originally from Richmond and loved it there but fell for the lie here. This is the worse place EVER!!!! Seniors and retired military are treated like trash. I am both and if you get into a financial bind forget help because they will not help you. No matter where you live this is a ghetto town. I keep hearing it is because of the drugs. I don't believe it. People are rude, self centered and nasty!! I have been here since 2012 and I am hoping to save enough money to move to another state. As for the people; you do something kind and they will stab you in the back for no reason, if you have street parking in front of your house neighbors will take up ALL the space including their own and if you complain to the city because your guests have no place to park you are told oh well it is public parking. I have seen people in line ( Walmart or Food Lion) blow their nose in their hand with no kleenex, reach inside their pants to scratch.... get the idea? If you have a flat tire, people will stop, look at you and then drive on. There is serious age discrimination if you are over 40 and the pay is very low. Houses are overpriced. A perfect example also is that when I bought my house not only did I get lied to but the realtor stole the microwave left by the previous owners. The drivers act like they are the only ones on the road and are dangerous. The non denominational churches are all fake and the other denominations will not help you if you are in need; you will be told they will pray for you. To make it all worse - the state taxes are outrageous!!!! I did research on where I want to move and TN has no state tax and the cost of living is 20% lower than here and housing/land is much cheaper. Oh and the police.....they stop you for any stupid thing and then you are treated and spoken to like a criminal. Staunton is okay but it is very "clickish". As you can tell, I can go on and on about all of the negatives. Unfortunately there is nothing good about this place. I have visited Verona and it seemed to be okay - people were friendlier.

Richmond is a great place to retire -- look south of the James river or to the north east for a more country feel but still close to everything the town has to offer.
