Hi all,

I recently got a reckless speeding ticket in Sussex, VA while driving at 83 in 70 speeding zone. I did not know that VA considers reckless driving on >80mph and it is a class 1 misdemeanor. I understand how bad I have screwed up and want to know your opinion on what should I do. I have held IL driver license since 2016 and had only one ticket in last Sept when I crossed a red light in Pittsburgh. However, I went to court and it was changed to non-moving violation. I have held NC driver license since Jan of this year and no tickets on that. I do not have driving history before 2016.

I have a court date in Sept and I can go there. But, should I lawyer up or they commonly decrease the sentence on showing up to court (as happened to me in Pittsburgh). Right now I am in the process of getting my driving record from IL and NC.

If you think hiring a lawyer is the only best option then can you suggest one? And any estimated charges?

Thank you for help!!

Go to the Northern Va page and do a search on Reckless Driving then read until your heart is content. But since I am not familiar with that court system I would say hire an attorney. If all you want is a plea deal then tell them upfront that their bill should not be for trying the case. I can't suggest anyone for you though. Find one who says they are on friendly terms with the commonwealth attorneys office though.

Sussex County, VA is speed trap city. Get you a lawyer. They may be able to get the ticket reduced to regular speeding.
