We actually prefer the mointains to the coast. I think Floyd has a higher elevation than Staunton, doesn’t it?
Our experience in trying to get down the mountain from Floyd in a surprisee ice/snow storm was horrendous. Everyone just stopped in the middle of the road, and we were stuck for hours! All we could think of was what would happen in a medical emergency? Yikes!

Getting off many mountains can be like that in an ice or snow storm. Remember Atlanta in their little bit of ice?

Check out Lexington, actually more artists than Staunton.
There is a fiber group and a big quilter coop near Lexington.
There is also a big classic car building that sells and shows classic cars near Lexington.

Coming back to strongly suggest Lexington as well. A friend and I used to drive there a couple of times a year. We enjoyed it very much. https://townsquarepublications.com/a...-lexington-va/

Asheville NC is really cool. I love it and really enjoy visiting now and then. But, if you are considering the Big Picture, I recommend that you carefully weigh the pros and cons of retiring in VA vs NC. Kiplinger helps! https://www.kiplinger.com/kiplinger-....php?ids=47-34

Raleigh, in my opinion, is a nice place but overrun too much with tourism in the summertime.
