Dixiecrats switched parties because of civil rights laws passed under Truman and Johnson. They called them Dixiecrats since the Southern part of the party splintered from the rest. Strom Thurmond of South Carolina was the most prominent example. I don't consider racism conservative or liberal. It seems that there's a large poor underclass in the South that resents blacks and foreigners. I still see it from friends who have very high incomes and education. I think evangelical religion plays a big part of it.

It has nothing to do with liberalism or conservatism. It has to do with post-Civil War Reconstruction where there was resentment toward Northerners and former slaves. Carpetbaggers and scalawags were opportunists who got rich off the reconstruction.

If there had never been slavery, there would have never been a Civil War. The way I see the resentment, I view it like the playground bully. The bully gets sanctioned for his actions on so many fronts. He doesn't feel bad about his actions, but he's angry that his behavior is being put into check. He can't take his anger out on those more powerful than him. Instead he takes his anger out on the persons he victimized, and those who benefited from him being sanctioned.

I think all states could benefit from a top rate passenger rail.

One thing that more people need to understand is that the southern states haven't operated quite like other places. In the South, race has long played a big role. The Dixiecrats were a big part of the way politics has operated in the South. This was even more so during the post-Reconstruction era. And then the switch during the 1960s.

Interesting that you mention the underclass, and resentment towards Blacks. As a Black man who grew up in the South (in Georgia, about 1 hour west of Atlanta), there were some things I started noticing. The persons who were the meanest, and most likely to take their racial resentment out on me were individuals who came from the working class, or in some cases, the working poor. Interestingly, I also met some very nice kids who happen to be working class or working poor. The popular kids, the middle-upper class kids, the kids who got the highest grades. I seldom saw that racial resentment from them.

Where did I say Northern Virginia is racist? Please don't lie and misinform. There is a difference between the Democrat party (politicians) and Democrat voters.

A tangible difference for the state of Virginia would be for it to go red again, with lower taxes. Don't forget, Northern Virginia benefited over Maryland for years because the conservative government in Richmond was more business friendly. This stuff matters and affects all of us. Not Qanon bs that is your way of discrediting.

I wasn’t angry, I was mocking.

I’m sure you already know. But the $3.7B deal will be huge for rail service in VA.
