I am a Virginian transplanted to Texas years ago. I am interested in a return, specifically, SW Va. Desperate to return to the beauty I knew so many years ago. I am looking for some acreage (10-50). Any suggestions ?

Other counties: Washington, Russell, Smyth, Wythe. Avoid larger cities, as the price of acreage will skyrocket within 40 miles. I would include Bristol in this category.

Also avoid any coal mining areas; anything west of the Clinch River.

s.g.t., Southwest Virginia begins just west of Roanoke and continues a good long way until you reach the TN border You'll have to narrow it down a bit

The topography of the Appalachian coalfields is steep and rugged; the valleys are flood-prone. Social problems such as high drop-out rate, poverty, high suicide rate, grim and dying small towns. Polluted and dirty; roads clogged with coal trucks. You would have difficulty obtaining mineral rights to any acreage, as the mineral estate is commonly "severed" from the surface estate. Accordingly, your land could be strip mined without your consent.
