I see loads of these for sale, but they seem to be on the cheaper end - does anyone out there live in one and like it? A friend who is a realtor said, oh, they're awful, always going up or down. Some seem quite big for the price - are they less costly just because they are mostly built in the 70s/80s or just not easy to live in? We have school age kids, so no toddlers tumbling or older folks with canes...

we live in a tri-level and the only thing that is a negative is that sound does not have long hallways to travel through. As a result the noise from one level is often just as loud on another level! Otherwise no complaints.

I grew up in one and my current neighborhood has many. They were designed on the concept that the lower level with the family room would be for the kids and the middle level would be for the adults. The main advantage is you have 2 smaller staircases instead of one large one. My last house was a front/back trilevel with only 2 steps between the middle and lower level. Where in Virginia are you looking to live?

Daihav, where in Virginia do you want to live?

There are places where you can find split-level homes for under $100,000. But if you need a job, that may not exist in the same area with the split-level for under $100,000. If you are self-employed or independently wealthy and employment is not an issue, check out some of the towns in the southern parts of the state.

For example, when I searched on realtor.com for homes under $100,000, in South Boston, VA, it came up with 58 homes.

There is also a website dealing with split-level home design.
Here's the link:

Split-Level Home Design Guide

I have lived in a split level. Though I would not set out to look specifically for a split level, it was an ok house as far the house's lay-out goes. An updated split-level can be nice.
