My husband has applied for several jobs through the state of Virginia over the past year. He was called for an interview by the county of Albemarle recently for a state job he had applied to a few months ago. He had a phone interview set for the end of September. Then they called yesterday and said the state put a hiring freeze on all jobs for the next year or so and the inteview was cancelled. Something about the funding for human services being cut all of a sudden. Does anyone know about this?

It was on the news last night that state revinue's for the month of August are down %2.5 from this period last year. In other words there is a budget shortfall of over 2 Billion dollars. The Governer has ask state agency's to provide budget inputs of 5, 10 & 15% cuts if necessary. I am guessing that there is now a hiring freeze until the budget situation is resolved. Virginia likes to pay as they go whenever possible.

There are ways around this. You could offer to be hired as an hourly contractor at the equivalent rate and then get converted to employee once the hiring freeze is lifted.

Well, that is good to know. We weren't sure what to think. Hopefully, they will fix the budget and things in VA and around the country will get better soon.

It's a great idea to try hourly contracting. I think that would be a wonderful option, but we have young kids and need a full time job that offers benefits.

Thanks to you both for your input!

Shame too! Albemarle is a beautiful area!

Best of luck!
