Hi,
We are separating from the military summer of 08 and love Virginia. My husband is an Allergist hoping to join a practice or start one. We love Leesburg, but it is saturated with Allergists at this point. City conveniences with warm and friendly people would be perfect!

since it is similar to what you are looking for. My reply there is exactly what I would have suggested to you. Ladysmith, VA is growing a LOT, and I believe anyone who is the first to start that kind of business here will do great. Now is the time to get in on the ground floor of this development. 7,000+ homes are to be built in the next 10-15 years.

a new 100,000 sf medical bldg is being built in leesburg on the Conwall Hosptial campus.
We have BC/BS and only have 3 Allergist that are in our plan in Leesburg it self. NOW LANDSDOWNE (has a Leesburg zip) is about 15 minutes away between Leesburg and Ashburn. Is where ALL the new Medical Bldgs are because the new INOVA Hospital was built there. It's a Medical MEGA plex!

Try also Purceville or Barryville or Lovettesville all smaller than Leesburg but still nice little towns.

Leesburg has the IDA LEE rec center and it has TONS of programs for kids and adults. It has a great playgound and will soon have an Outdoor themed pool. It's a great family town and the schools in Loudoun cpounty are top notch!

Check out Haymarket or north Gainesville. There is going to be a hopital built in Haymarket (a result of the INOVA/PW Health Care System merger). Haymarket has all of the conveniences of a big city, but has controlled the small town feel. The schools here are all great as well and you have access to George Mason University's Freedom Aquatic and Fitness Center.

Check into the Roanoke Valley, Carilion may very well be hiring allergists during the current expansion of it's 28 acre (!) biomedical park. I know they're looking to hire 192 specialists and furthermore there is terrific opportunity for independents given that some of those 192 positions will be filled by independents whom are attracted to the simplicity of working for Carillion. We have city conveniences and very warm and friendly folks in the Roanoke area! If the idea of living in far stretching valleys surrounded by gorgeous mountains appeals to you then I would seriously consider Roanoke. I was in fact speaking with a fellow North Cross parent today who is an OBGYN teaching to grad students at Carilion, ahd she said that they're building up to become a BIG player, with the goal to become something like the "Mayo Clinic" for the Mid Atlantic region.

The Leesburg area is very nice also. However I'd urge you to investigate Roanoke. I talked to no less than three North Cross (our girls' private school) families today during the regional "Destination Imagination" competition. One was a physician who moved from San Antonio to take her residency here in Roanoke and after six months both her and her husband said no way are we leaving Roanoke and bought a house Another family came from northern Virginia, the father works for IBM and was relocated to Roanoke for an 18 month stint, and fell in love with the area and refused to leave. That was 21 years ago, and he is now lead director in one of IBM's larger enterprise contract divisions and works out of his home office in Roanoke (by the way, if there is anyone who knows of Java developers graduating from Virginia Tech this year, he's already hired 7 and is looking for 4 more!) Another family came from Pittsburgh after vacationing in the area and fell in love with the natural beauty and moved as soon as they could.

Roanoke is a smaller metro area (about 240,000 people) but the people here are very friendly and supportive, the economy (particularly healthcare and college related) is strong and getting stronger and since it's not yet a "third tier" city (yet) it's a good bet insofar as starting a new practice is concerned.

Of course there are countless other "great places" to live in Virginia, with a little bit of research I'm sure you'll find several that really suit you. I hope this helps a little!

Sean

BC/BS is blue cross/blue shield health insurance. most federal employees use BC/BS because it's nationwide so wherever we transfer to we don't have to change health plans.
Northren Virginia (NOVA) has one of the worst Allergery seasons in the US. (according to my family doctor) Both my husband and youngest daughter have been hit real hard since we moved here last year. We are now seeking an allergist.

So if you really like the leesburg area (I actually like Purceville better) The nyou could still live here and hubby could have a practice in one of the many outlying areas that are within a 30min commute. I really don't see Leesburg being overrun with allergist though. Like I said Landsdowne (deerfield pkwy) is right next to the new hosp. and it's a big medical complex and has a Leesburg address. (but it is 10-15min from town)

Loudoun county is more affordable than Fairfax and it has great schools and tons of parks and rec facilities.
