The worst part about winter in NN/Norfolk is the wind from all the water blows almost constantly and is frigid, especially on the peninsula. Unfortunately you get barely any pretty snow to go with the cold, just freezing wind and rain that is as cold as ice and is being blown at you by the wind like little stinging missles. It will, I kid you not, drop to 33 degrees and rain for days. Every once in a blue moon you will be rewarded with some snow, and the slightest dusting shuts the entire area down.

Its not that the South is any warmer on any particular day, its that it stays warmer longer.

In Virginia, you can expect the summer to last well into October. Then the first frost comes around Halloween time.

I've lived here my whole life (grew up in northern virginia) and never saw a White Christmas. Except maybe one year in 1989 when we got a dusting of snow.

The coldest months in Virginia and January and February. In late February, a thaw comes, and by March spring has arrived!

I have lived in northern Virginia off an on for the past ten years, and I see where someone above said Virginia is sunny, and I say compared to what? It rains quite a bit here and when it's not raining, it's cloudy. It's only sunny about a third of the time. Combine this with the unbearable humidity in the summer, and it's not somewhere you move to for the weather. If you're looking for nice weather, there's nothing like southern California and even central and northern CA are all nice with the exception of the northern coastal areas which are also wet and cold. Also, southern New Mexico, parts of Arizona that are a bit higher in elevation like Prescott, and some of Colorado which might get cold at night, but has loads of sun and no wet, cold winters or hot, unbearable summers might be better options.

You can do a "climate comparison" between any two places by going to weather.com and selecting "weather apps" and then "climate comparison". Make sure and check the precipitation there as well. For most of Virginia you'll see it gets more rain than Portland, OR, which makes for a cold, wet, overcast winter.
