We need to live in Maryland so we can get instate tuition for her after 6 moths. My question is, if we get an apartment near one of the Metro stations near UM, about how long will the commute be to downtown DC?

If any one has any suggestions on specific areas that are close to UM and the Metro that would also help a lot, thanks. I'm pretty flexible on the rent.

There's a huge apartment complex right near Greenbelt station and 495 and 193. If you look back on this forum everyone says to avoid that place. There's another community, close to Greenbelt Metro, and next to the police station, that I have heard good things about.

As for how long, we don't know where you're going so its hard to guess. You can try the trip planner at Metro - Home page to get the best estimate for Metro.

It takes about 30 minutes to go from College Park to Metro Center during rush hour.

Silver Spring would be a possibility - there are University of Maryland shuttles that run from downtown SS near the Metro station. Silver Spring is on the Red Line, which may mean no transfers needed depending on where you work in downtown DC.
