ewww. I don't think that's realistic with a family that size. It would be difficult to find any place in this region on that salary much less Bethesda. Do you all have any debt? Are you trying to rent or own? My guess would be even in a best case scenario that salary will not work for Bethesda, but perhaps there may be something else that works better. What made you initial decide to look at Bethesda?

i have an offer for that amount in bethesda. do you have any idea what's the minimum salary to survive there for family of 4?
we don't have any debt. we are looking for apartment around there, not the pricey one of course. not necessary in bethesda, but around that area which are cheaper than bethesda, but not too far for commuting (NoVa/Fairfax or MD/MoCo), because i know the traffic will be bad.

If your kids are in school they'll qualify for free lunch.

You'll see by this profile //www.city-data.com/city/Bethesda-Maryland.html that Bethesda's median househould income is $130k in 2009 (and even that sounds seriously low for Bethesda). It's a very affluent area. A family of four would need significantly more than 3500k a month to survive in Bethesda and most of Montgomery County.

For a decent place, you probably would have to consider Northern PG County/Anne Arundel County. Most of the places that pop up for Montgomery County that is in the $1300-$1600/month range are not good places or aren't in good areas.

What are some of the things you are looking for?
How many bedrooms?
Is there a price range you want to stay under?
How far are you willing to commute?

Thank you for the inputs. Is anyone could give me an idea what's the minimum salary to survive then?

Because we have 4 persons, it means that we need to find a two bedrooms apartment at least, budget less than 2000, prefer near good school of course (i'm sure this is a classic reason for all parents to have their kids in the best education they could give), and around 20 miles max to commute.

That's a very vague question and it could really vary from person to person and from town to town around here. For some having money for entertainment is necessary while other just need food and gas for their vehicles to survive. If I would guess it, with two kids, at least a $50,000 salary would be necessary to have an apartment and survive based on the criteria you gave. Without having that amount of money your options are unfortunately extremely limited.

I would recommend a place like Laurel which is exactly 20 miles away from Bethesda as a place you should strong look at. Out of all the places within a 20 mile radius, it is probably the most affordable and depending on what neighborhood you live in you can put your kids in some good schools there. I would suggest you do some research on that area. Just starting out here, I think that is the most realistic option to fit your criteria. If you don't like Laurel you could also try Greenbelt or Beltsville. Depending on where you stay both of those places have nice parts and the commute wouldn't be too bad.
