We're thinking about getting some aftermarket tinting done on our car in anticipation of our new baby (basically to reduce sun light in the face as much as possible) and started looking into all the various state laws and regulations on tint limits. Little did we know, the limits are ALL over the place especially in the states that we're most likely to be driving in (not to mention exemptions that applies specifically to SUVs and trucks, but not regular passenger sedans and coupes). For example, the tint limits for front passenger windows range anywhere from 35% in MD and VA to 50% in DC to 70% in PA and NY! My question is, has anyone been pulled over and ticketed for illegal tints while driving through another state when the tints are actually legal in your home/registered state?

Have you ever been ticketed for going 65 in VA when your State's maximum is 70? I think the short answer is you are required to comply with local laws. My SIL got a ticket in California while she was visiting from Arizona for windows too dark. Based on that, I would say YES, you can get a ticket. Is it a little picky??? YES, again! They have those little stick on screens just for sweet babies!!

Sure, you can be ticketed. In my opinion, the chances are exceptionally low unless you have egregiously dark limo tint.

In NY, I drove a car that was something like 15% too dark for 6 years and never had an issue. I moved the car to MD and never had an issue, although I have no idead whether I was in compliance or not.

I got an aftermarket tint and the people told me that MD was 35%. I wanted 50% because I ave black leather and it gets HOT in the summer. But, staying within the limits increases the resale value of your car. Not too many people are going to buy a car with tint they may get a ticket for. Be safe, get the legal limit and buy one of those suction pull down shades for under $20.
