There are areas where you will see Christmas lights. There was one spectacular house in Northwest DC, owned by a church bishop. Also, you should visit the Mormon Temple in Kensington and see their lights and live Nativity scene.

Yeah, it was depressing the first couple of years here--I really missed the neighborhood family lights and displays. I'm finally getting accustomed to the lack of house decorating and, of course, we do some of our own--it helps to keep my spirits up when it gets dark so soon, as well as celebrate the season. Plan to go into DC and check out the national christmas tree & menorah too.

Take a trip to Annapolis and see the boats with lights. Then come on down to North Beach and Chesapeake Beach and see the two Town's decorations. Drive the streets and see the houses, too.

North Beach has them on the beach and Boardwalk.

I live in Baltimore County now. The neighborhoods near me are lit up as colorfully as Vegas right now. In Montgomery County you have to go into older parts of Rockville to find these old fashioned all-American neighborhoods.

Thoguh most illegal immigrants do celebrate Christmas. See there IS some good in everybody, ain't that right?

Yes, the Mall and downtown areas are pretty gray (business oriented and people tend to leave at night). I imagine you've found lights, etc. in Georgetown, Old Town Alexandria, etc. There are also displays in some parks (pay to drive through). Frederick and Harpers Ferry are a bit of a drive but struck me as Christmasy. We went to Frederick one year and toured a variety of old homes (the city organized a system where you'd buy tickets and could visit a certain number of homes of your choosing, as I recall). I assume the Kennedy Center still has free and paid shows during the holiday season.
