I currently live (renting) and work in Northern VA and my job is moving to DC, but starting soon, I will only need to go there once or twice a week. The other days I will be working from home.

I am not sure how many more years I will live in the DC area, so I am not looking to purchase another home, but will continue to rent.

Given that I have flexibility and can telework, would love to hear some suggestions from Marylanders as to places I might move to that are cheaper than NoVA and where I can catch a train or bus directly into DC - considering Annapolis - would that be cheaper?

Again, since I have the flexibility and only need to go to DC once or twice a week, it would be great to live in a community, rather than a suburb.

Thanks, bfg

Are you interested in Baltimore? It is a real city, and less expensive than anything in the DC metro area. Another option is Frederick which has transit and a real community. Other Maryland suburbs are just suburbs, and not significantly cheaper than NoVA.

Regarding Annapolis, it has no public transportation to DC. You would have to drive to a DC metro stop. It is also not cheaper than NoVA.

I live in Frederick County MD which is considerably cheaper than anywhere east of it... Carroll, Howard, Montgomery etc. It is a nice, somewhat rural county with real towns (not sprawl) and and good infrastructure. The MARC train runs from Frederick city, Brunswick and Point of Rocks and each of these towns have good rentals available. PORs and Brunswick rents are QUITE cheap for this region and both currently have new home communities being built up. (Brunswick Crossing and Canal Run).

You can also take 270 straight into the city. It can get quite congested but I've heard it isn't as bad as NOVA... but then again who knows? I've met few people who have really experienced both first hand with enough frequency to say either way...

Frederick county also has easy access back to Loudoun either via 15 (which can get crowded) or 287 (turns into MD 17) which few people seem to know about...

I'll be watching this thread however, since my husband and I are seriously considering the opposite move due the fact that MD has higher taxes than VA. Also VA seems to have more jobs in the herndon/reston area than MD does in the Columbia/Rockville area but that wouldn't have any impact on your move...
