$1 billion casino at National Harbor proposed by Prince George’s Executive Baker - The Washington Post

Quote:

Prince George’s County Executive Rushern L. Baker III said Thursday that he wants to see a billion-dollar casino on the banks of the Potomac River, arguing that a “high-end” gaming destination at National Harbor would be a catalyst for economic development and generate much-needed tax revenue.

The announcement, which carries considerable political risk for Baker (D), is certain to shake up a debate in Annapolis over legislation to expand Maryland’s gambling program — and add fuel to one in Prince George’s about what kind of development the county should embrace.

The developer of National Harbor endorsed the plan Thursday, but the prospect of bringing a full-fledged casino to Prince George’s faces considerable hurdles, including mixed views among county lawmakers and staunch opposition from the owner of a planned casino in neighboring Anne Arundel County.
I realized that attracting employers has been a tough sale, but this is the height of desperation. He can no longer talk about improving this county's image and do something like this.

A Casino in the DC Metro region will be a goldmine. I bet Atlantic City will chime in on this too.
Frankly I don't get the opposition to casinos as far as image. Do casinos bring in more crime? I go to the Hollywood Casino every few months the immediate area doesn't seem crime ridden.

I can see both sides of y'all's arguments. PG really needs some real employers. I know the FBI HQ is up for grabs right now... that'd be sweet. A gambling house? Not so much.

At the same time, I don't see much that's morally wrong with casinos. Gas stations and convenience stores across the state already serve gamblers' needs with the lottery, and that's very much state-sanctioned...

I cannot find any clues about where it will build up on.

There were rumors from the beginning that National Harbor would have a casino one day. The Gaylord already feels like one inside but without the slots. The development is an entertainment and convention hub and a casino would add to it. If it truly is upscale, then it should benificial to the county.

I think this guy sums up my opinion on the issue. The notion that a Casino would harm the county's image any more than poor schools and high crime is frankly absurd.

Upscale casino could help Prince George’s image - The Washington Post

Quote:
Here’s some stuff that hurts Prince George’s County’s image: Seeing your former, two-term county executive sentenced to seven years in federal prison for accepting bribes. Having some of the lowest-achieving schools in Maryland. A homicide rate that rose last year while the trend in the District was down.

Compare that with the stigma that supposedly will result from allowing the extension of gambling to a new corner of a state that’s already approved five slots venues in other jurisdictions and runs a daily lottery that’s been around for 39 years.

If the odds of winning were 50/50...perhaps I could be for a casino especially if it will help the state. I use to gamble...but gave it up...like most others, I can't afford to throw money away. I have watched people lose hundreds and in some cases thousands in Laurel at what I refer to as the hell hole of Laurel. I would hope that the gaming comission will keep an eye on those types of places. Outside of tax dollars, I will not support the casino with my hard earned money.

Gambling is like anything it can be disastrous if done to excess. I'll say this though I don't think casinos are the Godsend that Baker and other supporters think it will be.

A gambling house doesn't do baker's vision justice. Think of the Bellagio in las Vagas. Did people who saw ocean's Eleven call it a gambling house? It's a very posh hotel with top tier restaurants and a casino. These places are glorified in movies like Mission Impossible, James Bond Movies, etc. We're not talking about Dover Downs or even Maryland Live. Think Ceasars, Harrahs, Bellagio, etc.

I can see both sides as well. But the type of place considered wouldn't have crime issues because half of those who would be "hanging around" wouldn't be able to afford to be in the place. In addition, the security would be insane.

I'm not for or against at this point. We do need the jobs and the revenue. On the other hand, is this all we can do to improve things?

Until there's far better Metro or other public transport access, no.
