Casinos for everyone!

Boulevard at The Capital Centre pitched as alternative casino site - Maryland Politics - The Washington Post

Quote:
Largely lost in the debate over a potential casino at National Harbor or Rosecroft Raceway is another, long-shot site in Prince George’s County: the Boulevard at the Capital Centre in Largo.

Charles Hopkins, a Prince George’s native and principal of RMD Holdings, has pitched a plan to Maryland lawmakers to put Casino Largo at the shopping center. As envisioned, the venue would have 4,750 slot machines, 117 table games and a host of other amenities, including a night club, spa and small sports arena.

The funny thing is that guy has been trying to piggy-back on every controversial development that has been discussed recently. I remember a blog post he wrote on getting Whole Foods to come to the Boulevard if Cafritz fell through. Now he does make a vaild about transportation but I know that they had serious safety issues in the past. If that is still a problem it would be hard to get anyone to come their if that site became a viable option.

I saw this before when they had the original hearing. This makes way less sense than National Harbor. I mean the only positive about this location is the access to highways and transportation, but that's where it ends. First, safety is an issue with this area, the metro station is consistently one of the most dangerous, and this location is even closer to Anne Arundel County. If they didn't like the National Harbor site, who is going to support a casino that is even closer?

They can pitch whatever they want, but to me, that site will always be the home of the Capitals and the Bullets.

They wouldn't especially since it is so close to AAC. Like you mentioned safety is definitely a concern as well as reputation. I think people outside of PG County are more apt to go to NH or Rosecroft than to go to an area deeper into the county that has a bad reputation. Another con is that there is no mention of the quality of the casino at that location. Considering that the current thought is that there would only be one casino in the county (although I realize that it could change), if it comes we have to make sure that it comes hard and that it attracts the type of clientele that would make it successful.

Thousands of people come to that area for football games weekly. People will come if a billion dollar casino is placed there. Plus that area needs some hotels and entertainment to compliment the stadium. I do think National Harbor is a better location for the casino though.

At some point you're going to see slots in just about every type of business from restaurants to convenience stores to gas stations. That's been the plan since they were banned in the 70's, put them back everywhere they used to be. The sons and grandsons of the operators back then are leading the charge now. You don't see their names in the news because they work behind the scenes with the people that matter: key legislators, lobbyists, bureaucrats.

I don't think the football team will justify it. The team only plays 8 times a year there. At least with the Baltimore location, they have the baseball team in the same area.

True but coming for a game and coming to a casino are two different things. Also that billion dollar investment would be from a private investor. So far the only one who has publicly stated they would facilitate that type of investment is the national harbor. If they could match they may be able to create a desirable destination but they have struggled with occupancy since they got the reputation for being a crime magnet. I also read that one of the frustrations that patrons had was the dearth of shopping options compared to restaurants. If there is a concern of theft it would be a hard sell to bring high-end retail there. There have also been a concern over the number of teenagers that hang out there.
