Hi,

My husband and I are considering buying a home in the National Harbor area. I work in Rockville, MD and was wondering what the commute times would be like during the week. Any advice/suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you in advance!

Have you looked at the townhomes?

I think it depends if you take public transportation to work. Driving would be a nightmare to be honest.

I think the commute would be terrible however you do it. Google maps shows the preferred route around the Virginia side of the beltway as 34 miles, and 40 minutes. There are shorter routes (at 31 miles) using the George Washington Parkway.

I'd multiply the time by 1.5 for an average rush-hour commute. If you could be dropped off at a Metro station, it might work better. On the whole, i would look for another job if you want to live in National Harbor.

I wouldn't look forward to that commute. I could swing it for awhile but would be seeking employment closer eventually.

I would buy in Rockville or NOVA (Arlington) instead. NH is overpriced and I wouldn't consider that a safe bet.

Why in the world would you buy in NH if you work in Rockville? That's just giving yourself a long commute for no reason. Rockville isn't THAT expensive!

Thanks everyone for your replies. We have just moved from TX. I love the THs over there but was not sure of the commute. I agree I should change my focus to Arlington. The problem is finding new construction THs in our price range. We would like to stay within 500k for 3 bedrooms....

Do you mean Arlington TX or Arlington, VA? If you mean Arlington, VA then your commuting issues would be the same, but the only difference would be that you have a little bit more public transportation on that side. And I would add that you are unlikely to find a decent townhouse at that price range.

Yeah that price range is going to be tough new construction in Arlington or in any of the non-PG close in suburbs Does it have to be new? Could it be recent or well renovated? If so try Fairfax you can get a TH in that price range in some areas although I'm not sure the commute will be any better.
