There's an area with a lot of apartment buildings, in the southeast quadrant formed by the intersection of 29 and New Hampshire Ave. I'm looking at renting a condo there, in the Carriage House Terrace condo units. I didn't see anything especially concerning while I visited, except that the condos are right next to White Oak Towers, which is not a pretty building in person, and from the reviews online houses a lot of shady characters.

Is that area a decent place to live? I'm a 22 year old white male, graduate student at UMD. Will I be really out of place?

Here's the location:

Thanks for your time!

I live in one of the apartment complexes on Lockwood Drive, which is in the same general area. There is some crime in the area but if you are reasonably careful you shouldn't have a problem. My car was broken into once but other than that I haven't had any issues. I'm a middle aged white woman and I have never felt unsafe shopping at White Oak shopping center or coming home at night. The area has a mixture of people - black, hispanic, white, a lot of immigrants. I don't think you'll feel out of place. I would check out the condo complex at different times of the day and night though - each individual complex has its own issues and some of them have more problems than others. (I'm not that familiar with Carriage House Terrace, although I've driven by it.) The complex where I live tends to be more quiet and family oriented.
