Hyattsville already has a brewery, coffee roastery, and an apiary. And it will soon get a meadery as well.

The Hyattsville Wire learned that Maryland Meadworks will move into the space next to the Shortcake Bakery along Route 1, and we already spotted a beautiful renovated teak wood door at the entrance of their new location.

Also called honey wine, mead is an alcoholic beverage made from fermented honey that was popular in ancient Greece and is mentioned in everything from the Rigveda to Beowulf. Then, sugar happened.

“When cane sugar overtook honey as a popular, less expensive sweetener, honey harvests declined, prices went up, and the byproducts once used to make honey wine all but disappeared,” noted Wine Enthusiast. “Mead melted into the shadows behind wine, beer and spirits.”

Now, mead is making a comeback. According to the American Mead Makers Association, mead sales surged 84 percent between 2012 and 2014.

In a LinkedIn profile, owner Ken Carter, a member of the mead makers association, describes Maryland Meadworks as producing “a wide variety of the finest quality meads (honey wines), made from all natural ingredients, including locally sourced honey, fruits, herbs and spices” since 2014.

Good publicity for Hyattsville, it was the cover the weekend's going out guide print copy as well. There is still a burst of restaurant/bar openings through the rest of 2017 all over Hyattsville and neighboring cities (I can think of 20 off the top of my head)

Also, can anybody provide any details on what is being built behind PG Plaza right now beside the Alterra apartments? Construction of whatever it is, is well underway, but haven't seen any details. There were stories about Belcrest Plaza redevelopment that are all very old.

It is the second phase of the Belcrest Plaza redevelopment project. It was called Plaza Americana, but I'm sure the apartments will be called something else. Here was my post about it last year.

So is this story below still suppose to ultimately be the plan?

https://ggwash.org/view/3484/33-stor...or-hyattsville
https://flic.kr/p/7dThoR

That is one heck of a development about to take place, much larger than I imagined.

Sorry, accidentally posted this the PG Plaza Development forum (which is also accurate)...wish we could merge topics...really I revived this link to have broader Hyattsville coverage with West Hyattsville, PG Plaza, and the Arts District are all really starting to develop, but the PG Plaza one is obviously still relevant.

Yes. It is one of those 20-year plan deals. THe remaining apartments directly behind the mall should be slated for demolition next year if they are keeping the same pace when they started Alterra.

It is frustrating to not have any updates from the city or media. It's not like this is a small project. I'm also interested in the large forest of trees that were cut down behind the towers. THey were cut down last year and there is no info on what's happening there. I recall the Landy development that is supposed to be there. I'm not sure if that is still the plan or not.

They are just painting the buildings, no tenants are moving in. Project is lead by Green Owl Design which is across the street to "Flight the Blight" until those buildings are knocked down. They are supposedly marked to be torn down for this project https://www.bisnow.com/washington-dc...ttsville-72726 which was noted in here before. Green Owl has a few posts about the painting on their facebook page https://www.facebook.com/greenowldesign/

Listen up Whiskey, Brandy, and Dutch Gin lovers. A distillery is coming to Hyattsville! THis area of Rt. 1 is becoming quite the destination for craft beer, mead, and now liquor. I certainly would have never seen this coming just 5 years ago. I thought Franklins was unique and cool. Now it will have company.

A distillery will open in Hyattsville sometime next year.

Sangfroid Distilling will make brandy, whiskey and the classic Dutch version of gin, known as genever, in a space to the right of the TESST building on Route 1 in Hyattsville’s historic downtown.

1. Franklins
2. Streetcar 82
3. Maryland Meadworks
4. Sangfroid Distillery
5. Vigilante (if you include coffee breweries. )
