Would this start appearing in DC anytime?

I don't know that the units would be that low in DC though, and if they aren't might as well go the group house route.

I had seen an article in the Post within the last year where a DC agency was trying this with some homeless people. I don't think the concept has spread to the commercial market yet, but it might.

Sure, there are a number of microunit buildings in DC and quite a few more are scheduled to go up across DC area. Just google the term and you'll find quite a few examples - most in DC proper, but some in the urbanized suburbs, too.

Curious about the rents (it was $1,000 for Seattle).

As a single--if on a professional income--I totally would be in that at $1,000 prices. More attractive than a basement or a room in a group house. As a couple (whether married or not), it'd be too claustrophobic for me though.

I agree completely and can definitely see why the trend is occurring in high price neighborhoods. Most Millennials care about "experiences" first and foremost. Many will give up "stuff" - the extra bedrooms, car, etc. - if it means they can have easy access to amenities, friends, job, etc. It's quite a reversal/backlash to the McMansion/3-car garage/drive 40 miles each way to work/SUV era they grew up in.
