My family is looking to relocate out of our current house in Arlington to get more space, yard, etc. We have fallen in love with Potomac, MD. Anyone have any input on what the morning & afternoon commute times would be to Capitol Hill. I work a few blocks away from the Capitol.

~Thanks

By car, you're probably looking at 35 minutes to an hour in the morning.

In the afternoon, you're probably looking at 28 to 45 minutes.

Via public transit, you could take the T2 and depending where you guys will be in Potomac, it'll either take you to Rockville or Friendship Heights metro station and then take metro to Judiciary Square station which will probably take you a little over an hour.

Hope that helps.

I haven't lived in Potomac for over a decade. And while I still visit there very often, most of my experience is a bit dated form an everyday commuter perspective. Albeit I'd say things have likely gotten worse if anything. But in general - it will vary depending on the time you leave and your hours.

Potomac to DC via the Clara Barton is actually not that bad. However, once you get to Georgetown, that's where the slowness starts. After that, it's just making your way across D.C. to Capitol Hill.

Returning though - there are pockets of congestion along Clara Barton - Chain Bridge, Glen Echo, and if you take it all the way to McArthur - that gets backed up big time. And depending on which part of Potomac you're at - if you're west of Falls Road, the intersection of River and Falls can also be bad. The left turn lane onto River Rd W. is not very long, so it ends up backing up all of Falls.

As I said - if you can shift your schedule so you get in early and leave early, it can be much better.

The other option is to take the metro from Bethesda, but then you'll be dealing with traffic to Bethesda to get on the metro.
