Being busy does not, unfortunately, always equate to being profitable.....or it could just be a business decision, redirecting their focus.

All I've heard is the owners just want out of the retail business. I guess it wasn't that profitable.

They could not compete with quality and up to date consumer trends .

The Grocery business runs on anywhere from 2-4 cents on the dollar profit. Wegman's and Whole Foods run on around 10- 12 cents on the dollar

And Whole Foods in Towson sux!

I will going to Walmart in a few minutes for a few things.

There are only four shoppers left in Maryland. I had some big time issues with them when they were around here. I think some of there employees came from the Baltimore Penitentiary. Especially when they were opened in the evening hours. And there has not been one around here for almost a decade at least.

I am also a big Shoppers fan and have been for many years. Great quality and huge variety for an affordable price.

I can't speak to the profitability of the chain, but Shoppers was recent bought up by United Natural Foods (UNFI) who seems to be on an aggressive buyout campaign for multiple grocers. The company wants to close down Shoppers in order to concentrate on distribution, or so the business articles indicate.

As a very long time loyal Shoppers customer I presumed to ask my local Shoppers Food Customer Service Desk for further details. The normally very pleasant and courteous Customer Service Desk person about tore my head off "Corporate tells us NOTHING so don't ask me!!"

It's a very frustrating situation all around.

Second, I feel for the poor lady who said she wanted a Trader Joes. Does she not know that the fresh food section in Trader Joes is smaller than Target's?

But I digress. Shoppers needs to be replaced by another full-service grocer. One that has a pharmacy and other services. Trader Joe's is a neighborhood convenience store and wouldn't be able to serve the communities as well as Shoppers did.
