Grew up in Chevy Chase, later lived Potomac/Darnestown. Keep in mind the “bleeding heart liberals” for DECADES have sent their children to private schools. Ever looked at the independent schools directory published by Green Acres School . . . There must be about 40-50 independent schools in lower Montgomery County/NW DC. They really don’t care very much about public schools as long as their children are well-educated.

This makes the situation worse. Say you move to a school district where the high school ranks 7. A few years later, they redistrict and now your kid gets assigned to a school ranked 4.

Oh well, all that planning and effort thrown straight out the window.

Former Montgomery County resident here. Ratings are subjective based on the criteria being used to judge the school district. The most subjective being ratings based on parents' input and the most objective being something like US News and World Report that has quantifiable criteria.

My personal subjective opinion is that the quality of MCPS is going down a bit, but even with a slip in quality it's still better than a majority of the schools in this country.

Now that it is likely that Joe Biden will become President, we will see even more illegal aliens flooding into Montgomery County.

Time to consider moving somewhere else. This is not going to be an easy decision for me.

Where are you going to go? Yale-MIT estimated there are between 16 million and 30 million illegal aliens in the US with a mean of 22 million.

With an agenda like yours I doubt many communities will want to have you.

A whole lot of people have an agenda to send their kids to the best-rated schools they can.

It’s not just Montgomery County, it’s a lot of counties.

Anne Arundel County used to have quite a few 9/10 high schools just a few years ago: Severna Park, Broadneck, Arundel, South River, and Chesapeake. Southern High School was an 8/10.

As the mentioned schools stand now:

Severna Park - 9/10
Arundel - 7/10
South River - 7/10
Broadneck - 6/10
Southern - 6/10
Chesapeake - 5/10

There’s a new high school that just opened in Crofton, and I think it will probably be at a similar spot as Arundel and South River, based on how the Crofton feeder middle and elementary schools perform, so it will probably be a 7/10.

What’s driving these low ratings in most counties appear to be low Algebra test scores and unaddressed academic achievement gaps. Bethesda-Chevy Chase High School and Thomas S. Wootton High Schools are a 7/10, and it’s basically because the Algebra test scores are really bad, and because there’s major achievement gaps between different racial and income groups in the school. The affluent W schools and B-CC in particular have worse academic outcomes for their disadvantaged students than several other schools in the state do, which is surprising given their reputations of being “good schools.” Seems like those schools aren’t really anything special, they just have very very affluent students who likely get private tutoring, SAT prep, etc. and then test well. Their performance is probably attributed to parental involvement/stuff outside of school, as these schools themselves don’t appear to be doing much. Even more alarming, Black students at Whitman are over 20 times more likely to get suspended than white students, even though they make up just 3% of the student body. This disparity is way worse than at most of the schools in the state. I remember a few years ago, Whitman dropped all the way to a 4/10, and all the parents their fainted and had a heart attack over it.

Seems like the ranking and rating sites are trying to push school systems to do more to make their schools more equitable, which is a good thing. Maybe rich snobs will start caring about equity issues when they start affecting their property values .
