I currently live in Downtown Silver Spring and you can find a 2-3 bedroom walking distance to the Silver Spring Metro for under $2000 (and you won't have to learn Spanish). I've lived here for 4 years and have never personally had any problems with crime (but I do live 2 blocks from the MC police department). Restaurants and clubs are walking distance and plentiful. I would recommend it to anyone who wants to be close to DC but doesn't want to pay for it.

We're looking at a house off Veirs Mill Road near Wheaton Claridge Park (north of the Wheaton metro stop). Any ideas on how safe this neighborhood is? I have to commute to Bethesda for work and will likely take the bus. Thanks.

Default rockville, silver spring or gaithersburg

all of those areas have some neighborhoods that are more desirable than others. rockville is not super upscale, not by a long shot but there good and not so good neighborhood. get something close to a metro, you'll never regret it.

silver spring is huge, some neighborhoods close in (near silver spring metro) are nice and convenient, you could go 5-6 miles from there and still be in silver spring but not so convenient.

there is no metro in gaithersburg, closest is the last stop on the red line, the shady grove station. check metros website at www.wmata.com for exact metro locations and available transportation to them.

I always tell people to drive around the neighborhood they are considering purchasing between 9-11pm on a friday and/or saturday night when the weather is nice to get a feel for the neighborhood. bad stuff can happen anywhere. we just had a murder in bethesda, which is almost unheard of. and check police stats.

Can someone help us with the following questions:

-What is the crime in each area?

-What is the quality of the public transportation? Metro stops nearby?

-What area has the best shops and restaurants?

-Any other suggestions or hints?

Thanks!
